Text: Place First and Last Names into Separate Columns*

I often need to reformat text fields (e.g., names of people, projects, or organizations).

You can parse a phrase from a single cell into separate cells with Text to Columns. For example, you could transform Ann Emery in one cell into Ann and Emery in two separate cells.

  • Highlight the cells that need to be separated.
  • Go to the Data tab.
  • Click on the Text to Columns icons.
  • In the pop-up menu, select Delimited, select the delimiter (e.g., a space), and then click Finish.
